Creditors File Involuntary Bankruptcy Petition Against Friedman's Jewelers

An involuntary petition was filed against Friedman's Jewelers on January 22, 2008. The retailer has several stores in Georgia.

From TheLedger.com -

A group of jewelry sellers owed $9.1 million from Friedman's Inc. are trying to force the company into Chapter 7 bankruptcy - the retailer's second trip to bankruptcy court in just more than three years. Three New York-based jewelry firms - including the U.S. arm of India's Rosy Blue Group - filed the involuntary Chapter 7 petition against Friedman's on Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del. According to court papers, Friedman's owes two Rosy Blue affiliates about $6.3 million. The company also owes Paul Winston-Eurostar LLC $.19 million and two affiliates of Jay Gems Inc. about $950,000.

The Houston Chronicle -

The Addison, Texas-based retailer, however, is no stranger to the nation's bankruptcy courts.

The company emerged from Chapter 11 in late 2005 following its own reorganization, under the control of hedge fund Harbinger Capital Partners Master Fund I Ltd. Harbinger and Friedman's also purchased West Coast retailer Crescent Jewelers' out of bankruptcy in 2006. Together the company operate some 500 stores under the Friedman's and Crescent names throughout the U.S.

Harbinger, which invests heavily in financially distressed companies, declined to comment

I have been shopping with Friedman's for over 2 years, and they are the best company to shop with; they know me by name, and the associates are always very friendly. I feel at home when I walk into the Sumter, SC store. I am very sorry for the issues with the company and I hope for the best!!

I have been shopping at Friedman's for over 4 years. We purchased our wedding set there with the Diamond warranty. Since I have taken my bridal set back a total of 5 times, the last time I told the sales clerk that the diamond replaced in ring did not look like the same clarity of the other diamonds, I was told only the same style diamonds are placed in rings. I went back to the store this week to find that they were closing in the next 2-10 weeks, when asked about the Diamond warranty I was first given the wrong number. Then when I called the store back, I was told that she does not know about the handling of those warranties would need to check with manager. The next day with no return call, I called back to the store to be advised that those warranties would no longer apply. It seems every piece of jewelry I have purchased from Friedman’s the stones fall out of the rings. I have had nothing but bad experiences.

Friedman's is the worst jewelery chain around! I bought a ring and had it "sized" it took two weeks and they were supposed to call me when it came in, I never received a call, I had to call them. When I went to pick it up it was the same size as when I left it!!!!I am glad they are going out of business, it's all about karma. To bad from what I heard Whitehall Jewelers are buying them....dumb move....I won't shop there either.....I now shop with kay jewelers, they have lifetime diamond warranties and gold warranties....they are super nice, and go above and beyond if you have an issue with your jewelery. Plus they are nationwide and if I move any of there locations will take care of me!

My wedding set was purchased at Friendmans in Hermitage Tennessee and the ring guard broke. I got married in June 07 and March 1,08 I had to take the ring gurad to the Lebanon Tennesee store cause the Hermitage store closed down with no warning. It took till March 29, 08 to get my ring gurad back and it wasn't fixed. They kept it and as of April 16, 08 I still have no ring nd no answers. I was told my the employee that the business went bankrupt and the "middle man" doesn't return their calls about the complaining customers. I am very displeased with Friedmans and I wished I had NEVER done business with them. ALl they have done is give me the runaround and I am in fear that I will not see my ring again,,

TO ANSWER MR.FORDS QUESTION I USE TO WORK FOR THE COMPANY AND THEY WAITED UNTIL THE DAY AFTER XMAS TO TELL US THAT WE WERE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS. WE WORKED UP UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF JANUARY. THE WORST PART OF IT ALL IS THEY DID NOT PAY US FOR THE TIME WE WORKED NOR DID THEY GIVE US OUR SEVERANCE PACKAGE AND HAD THE NERVE TO TELL US IT WAS OUT OF THEIR CONTROL. THEY DESERVE TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS BECAUSE THE COMPANY WAS UP TO NO GOOD AND THE MERCHANDISE SUCKED!!!

I went into a Friedman's to pay my bill today and they handed me a new credit application and told me to fill it out. I asked if the money I was trying to pay would go to Friedman's and they said "no". What about the lifetime insurance Friedman's is supposed to provide for all jewelry (if a stone falls out of its setting)? Friedman's has always given me terrible service and they don't ever get anything right! If you pay for any service, you have to bug them about it and they have lied to me on many occasions. They also charge very high interest for jewelry. I have spent over $10,000 with them and feel very much "ripped-off". They deserve to go out of business because they do not take care of their customers and now it appears that they don't take care of anyone they do business with. I wish I had never walked into their store at the Macon Mall! It has been a horrible experience.

My husband gave me my engagement ring 12/13/2004. 3 moths later, the middle stone fell out. I took the ring in and was pressured to buy a more expensive ring with only one large stone. We did and also got the warranty. So now I am stuck with wondering if something happens to this ring, what will I do? We shop at Kay's now. Have been for 2 yrs. because the last time I took my ring in the girl didn't have a clue about what it meant to clean and inspect it. They had no problem sending us stuff in the mail about a sale or even calling, but no call to say they were going out of business. Shop at Kay's. they are the best.

I am a former employee of Friedmans and from day one I was lied to...... They lost my resume and application 4 times before I was offered a job there. I should have seen that as a sign from above.... Run .... Run fast..... But I didn't listen...Big mistake on my part. Friedman's management there lacks of ANY and ALL professionalism there. They knew they had plans to sell and liquidate the company back in August of 2007 and NEVER informed the employees of this or they did a VERY poor job of keeping us informed of anything. The corporate office showed favoritism to certain employees and I have grounds for 2 separate law suites if I wish to pursue. I am just glad I am gone from that chicken-sh%t place they think - they can call them selves a jewelry company. What a joke.....I am talking about their corporate office in Addison. A person asked earlier how they slept at nite...... Let me tell you ALL THE MANAGEMENT SLEPT VERY WELL........... Except us little folks that actually did the work..... None of us slept any and some still can't sleep..........Strait from a EX-Friedman's employee...... Addison, TX

I have never been so disappointed in a company in my life. My husband and i recently got married and has only wore his wedding band for 3 months and it had a loose stone. I sent in the ring and two months later i got it back and the stone was fake. Or so it looked like it. It was dull and looked like a burnt piece of plastic. So i sent it back in and after having back for 3 weeks it is loose again. I went last week and they told me that Whitehall was buying out Cresent and they would still honor my bonds. They had me sign a form and now that my husbands ring has a loose stone they said that the warranties are void. I asked the manager at whitehall if everyone who has a bond is screwed and she said "YEA". I am so upset with these people and i hope they get their shit straight. If not Whitehall will go down as well because i have had horrible service from them as well.

My Husband and I also walked into a Freidman's and later on regreted it. We both got our wedding rings there, a locket, and a sapphire heart shaped ring.
I had a diamond fall out of the heart shaped ring and it taken care of-not w/o a fight. My Husband's ring had some diamonds that were off centered and that was a pain in the a$$ to get then to fix right, I believe 3 visits it took. Then it was time for retipping on My wedding band set and My Husband's ring. 1st girl told me almost all of mine needed to be done, which there are 56 tips between my 2 rings and not covered from insurance and 1/2 of My Husbands. and it would be $20 for the 1st so many then $15.
Then My Husband went in and got a different story that only 12 of mine needed to be retipped. and only $10 for the additionals. always got a different story each visit. It took his ring 4 visits and also had to call to see if it was in, only one call to tell us it was finished, the 1st time. with his other 3 he had to go check on it and it was still screwed up. Then one of the tips broke off while in the jeweler hands and we had to pay for it to be fixed not the jeweler, and he put a gold tip on the last one to be fixed (the one he broke)when all the rest were white gold. My husband pointed it out to the sales associate and she made it seen as if he were lying until she got out a magnify glass. Our Freidman's associates were morans- well the ones that we had to deal with. Panama City, Florida.

My husband purchased a diamond ring for me for our 30th wedding anniversary from Crescent Jewelers and he also purchased the Lifetime Warranty. I have taken my ring in every three months to keep our warranty in affect and now I feel we have been lost in the shuffle. Shouldn't a service you have paid for be considered in a bankruptcy?

While there we delt with this same issue (we were in bankruptcy before) they then decided (right out of bankruptcy) to move the entire corportate office 1500 miles away. then they fall flat on their face 2 years later. karma is a b***h. They got what they deserved. I had almost 6 years in a position and was treated unfairly time after time. I am glad they are gone. As far as management and how they sleep at night. I bought a lovely Bulova watch for my husband, a class ring for his daughter, and several emeralds and diamonds for my daughter. I never had a problem with any of our purchases and was very pleased with the quality and value.

My son doesn't make a lot of money but he bought something special for a friend. He can only make the little 10 dollar payment each month, but he does it faithfully. In May he made his payment at the Blackstone Store, no one there ever said he could not make a payment. He was going to be late and did not want a late fee. They gladly took his payment of 10 dollars and on the next bill he was charged a late fee and the 10 buck. We send a copyof the receipts (thank heavens I have taught him to keep his receipts) to the World Financial Network Bank PO Box 182782 Columbus Oh 43218-2782. We got a letter from Friedmans Credit Card saying to would take 60 day to review. Yesterday we got a letter from World Financial in few or less words said we were the idiot to make a payment at a friedmans store and and that we made a payment to an installment loan not a creditcard payment. To bad wo sad.
My son is one person and has only one account with xfriedmans. I called the World financial and they did take off the late fee but would not give him credit for his payment. Said we had to call the corperate office... funny the line has been busy for hours. If I thought for a second not paying would not hurt his credit I would tell him to not pay but that is too risky. I never liked the company, heck even walmart has better jewlery than they did.
Unfortuately people, this is what is going to happen to a lot of businesses. The small are going to merge or go out of business, the big are going to get bigger. You are either going to win or lose, no inbetween. I feel bad for my kid, he is trying and while it is a measly 10 bucks that is a lot of money to a kid. If Friedmans took their business seriously they would not be in the cop out scape goat bankrupt chicken mess they are in.

I've been shopping at Friedman's for over 12 years and have purchased huge amounts of jewelry. Here lately, I've experienced numorous problems with my jewelry falling apart. I currently have a ring and a necklace worth about $3k that I can't get fixed and now, since they've went bankrupt, I am finding out that the so called paid for insurance plans won't repair my jewelry. Now I will be out of pocket having to pay another jeweler to fix everything that needs repaired. I am now also having a hard time making payments. I have tried to make my 4 payments lately but can't seem to get anyone to help me or call me back from the numerous of messages that I've left at several numbers. But I guarantee you that once someone finally answers one of the #'s given to me, my account will have accrued late charges. I am not going to be held responsible for late charges especially when I can't get any cooperation from anyone to pay my bill. Not to mention that I still have jewelry that is under warranty that I can't get fixed. The bad thing is that I hope Friedman's screw up doesn't cause my credit to get screwed up especially when there's no one to take my payments and there's no where to mail the payments too.. Can't someone post something regarding payments (credit card/in-house store credit)in the newspaper to help people out?

WHO ARE YOU TO CALL ANYONE AN IDIOT? I CAN HONESTLY SAY AS A SALES ASSOCIATE WITH FRIEDMANS I CAN HOLD MY HEAD UP PROUDLY AND WITH DIGNITY. I DIDN'T GO BANKRUPT PERSONALLY. I JUST WORKED FOR A CO. THAT DIDN'T HANDLE THE AFFAIRS PROPERLY. I CAN'T SAVE THE WORLD BOY, ONLY MYSELF AND IT LOOKS LIKE YOU NEED SOME ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES. BY THE WAY YOU DIDN'T MENTION WHERE YOU WORK, BUT I AM SURE IT IS NOT WITH A COMPANY THAT HAS EVER HAD FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY. ALSO, TO YOU PEOPLE WHO ARE SAYING YOU CAN'T GET YOUR WARRANTIES BACK. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GO THROUGH THE BANKRUPTCY TRIAL. WE ARE PAYING OUR DEBTORS. I THINK THAT IS WHY THERE IS LIQUIDATION. DUH???

My husband purchased my wedding set from Friedman's in October of 2007. I am just now finding out that they have closed. When he purchased the set he got lifetime insurance on it and all that stuff. So what do we do now that it is closed? I haven't had it long enough to need to use any of the stuff they talked him into buying. Also, they are reporting to the credit agency that he is behind on his payments which is completely false and it has pretty much ruined his credit. I don't know if this is true for anyone else but we also don't receive a bill from 'Friedman's'. It comes from another company. If anyone could please help with this matter it would be much appreciated. We are a young couple just starting out and I feel like we are getting taken for a ride down the wrong road. I too work in the lewelry industry. Left the selling end many years ago to go "behind the scene" because I was sick and tired of customers complaining that their jewelry broke. Most of you do not take your pieces off to go to sleep, nobody cleans their items or has pearl strand re-strung an re-knotted and when they break it tis the stores (associate) fault even though the strand is 10 years old and worn almost daily. Pearls are strung on pure silk and silk literally rots when it egts older than a year or two. I had one customer who came in eitha strand that was 15 years old and threatened me with an attorney if we did not replace all the pealrs that were peeling and chipping. "This is not what my hausband purchased. She had the origianl receipt!!! The pearl were baroque and crap to begin with, never cleaned or re-knotted. I took them in washed them, ( cacked up grime) and re-strung and re-knotted. She never knew the difference. Or how about the woman who brought in her diamond ring to be re-tipped wanting an estimate first. She told us not to do the work and when she picked up her ring she says"the diamond is chipped it was not when I took it brought it in ( it was chipped noted on the repair envelope) We had to replace a 1.25ct diamond of very good quality. Her husband called me and told me he would hit me if we did not cooperate. MR and MRS Ellis in NY state. I hope you remember that you did rip us off in 1990 at a store in Danbury. Jewelry must be cleaned and taken care off you bring your suits to the cleaners, right? If you think you have to purchase a warranty for any jewelry come on!! What does that say for the goods being sold. Same with warranties for electronics. Were is it written that you customers can get everything for free?? How do you think a Company will stay in business?? Now you are boohuuing. You get the quality you pay for. A 1ct diamond of the finest quality does not cost you $3,200. Be realistic. A reputable Jeweler will stand behind their merchandise, however only so long no one should expect things to be free. Also, stop returning what you bought after you have worn it for months or even years. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT?? Of course the stores are stupid and afraid enough to take all back to MAKE THE CUSTOMER HAPPY. Who do you thin kpays for that?? YOU DO. Get real, be responsible consumers and treat sales staff with respect. They are the ones on the front line and have to take all the bull even when you are wrong. Yelling and sreaming does not get you anywhere. Sales people shut down and will not do a thing for you. I could go on and on but then I might as well write a book about my 38 years in the retail world. I have been threatend with pyisical harm and I have been kissed.

1. When a retail company files for bankruptcy - chances are your warranty will no longer be effective because there is NO MONEY left to back the warranty. That is the chance you take when you buy a retail warranty. You can contact the bankruptcy court, but you will most likely get nothing.

2. If you dropped off your jewelry and they took it knowing they were filing for bankruptcy - that is theft. Report it to your local police. (The "going out of business" signs would have been a clue to you).

3. Companies will always come and go - especially in the current financial market - many companies are going under (even starbucks closed hundreds of stores). Expect more closures to occur.

I am so sorry so many clients had such bad experiences. The one thing I can say is it wouldn't have happend in my store. I left the company before the news of bankruptcy hit due to a foot injury. What I need to know is if anyone is still available in the corporate office to verify employement. If someone can let me know, I'd appreciate it. needer7@yahoo.com

After not getting a bill from Friedmans for several months, all the sudden I get a bill from cresent saying I owe a little over $300.00 When I asked cresent to send a itemised payment and list of purchases made on my account, they refuse to do so, That looks fishy to me, If they were aboveboard sending that info to me should not be a promblem. If they want the money, why won't they send the paper work. All the purchase's on the account may not be mine.
